 For the ceramic and design enthusiasts in Sydney, Table Talk 2: conversation pieces for a functional table is definitely worth looking into; John Dermer is a personal favourite of the large scale show also featuring some functional pieces of mine. The exhibition opens this Friday and will close later in May. Cool Clay Thank you to Debbie Pryor, curator of Craft for the shout out in The Age on Sunday. Congratulations to all the potters and ceramicists whose work was featured in "Cool Clay."   "We were delighted to grant Andrei Davidoff unprecedented access to the house and all its nooks and crannies, including its collection and archival and photographic records. He immersed himself in the stories of the Wentworth family, his work responding to the architecture, albeit unfinished; the collection, particularly those pieces with a direct provenance to the Wentworth family; and the more general history of the property as a museum."

This is a beautifully curated online shop which makes it that much easier to find unique objects crafted by creatives from around the world. Check it out here The last few months have seen me work on two big commissions - Ruyi Dumping and Wine Bar - a modern Chinese eatery and swell little bar in a very Melbourne laneway (16 Liverpool Street). The other commission, which occurred almost simultaneously (turning the studio into something of a factory, the backyard into a storage facility) was the Lexus Design Pavilion 2013. That involved creating large dark stoneware vessels (very Japanese) as centrepieces. Images to come. SHOWING 6 September – 12 October 2013 AT CRAFT 31 Flinders Lane Melbourne Thank you to everyone who attended opening night last Thursday. It was an honour to have my work on display at the same time as jewellers Claire McArdle and Anna Varendorff (in gallery one and three respectively). Referencing the Hadron Collider, The Speicherring Project presents a series of works which have been created as a result of the collision of Davidoff’s sculptural and functional ceramics practices. Davidoff adapts the term speicherring, the German word describing the collider in reference to his own work — creating new works through the ‘smashing together’ (both literally and metaphorically) of the sculptural and functional. In generating a new series of objects the relationships between them are reexamined. For this exhibition, Davidoff’s wheel formed functional ceramic work are created to enhance the space around them rather than as stand alone objects themselves. Some objects become sculptural while others retain their functional characteristics still others, Davidoff describes, are a ‘hybrid’ of the two. The works in The Speicherring Project are made from a variety of materials including porcelain, dark stoneware clay and lead as well as works on paper. Glaze, slip and solder are also used in developing a series of works, which approach the theme from different angles and perspectives. More info at CRAFT |
